What’s New? Besides over 450 New
Plants...
Children's Garden and Relaxation Garden
We are thrilled to be installing a
Children’s Garden and Relaxation Garden. For some parents, the words
"children" and "relaxation" don’t often get used in the
same sentence, but we are happy to be combining the two here at the greenhouse!
This past summer, we removed greenhouses #6 and #7 (the two hoop-style
greenhouses closest to the garden center). This left us with a 90’ x 100’
area in which to construct a nice garden for your enjoyment! While it is a work
in progress, it will eventually include the following:
~A Picnic Shelter
~A Gazebo
~A Tryke Track
~A Chicken Coop with a Living Green Roof
~A Large Grass Hill
~A Children’s Playhouse
~An Outdoor Chalkboard
~A Giant Outdoor Checkers Board
~A Grass Maze (planted with Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’) in the shape of
the state of Kansas
Oh... and just a few plants!
So... one parent can shop while the other watches the kiddos. Or, you can take a
breather from marathon shopping, sip a cool drink, and see what you still have
on your list to get. Or, pack a picnic lunch, and regroup with your gardening
buddies for lunch.
Recycling Plastic Pots and Flats
We have always reused what pots and
flats we can- washing them and disinfecting them before they are filled with new
potting soil and replanted. And, many of our customers have kindly joined us in
our recycling efforts by bringing in their empty pots. Previously we have only
been able to reuse pots and flats that came from us. While we would prefer you
do all your garden shopping with us :-) , we can now accept any and all plastic
pots and flats. Please empty your containers of excess soil (they do not need to
be washed out), and then bring them in the next time you visit us. What we can’t
reuse we will give to our local recycling center. Let’s do our part to help
the environment!
Cardboard Boxes
As mentioned above, we try to recycle
when we can. When we receive shipments in cardboard boxes, we cut off the top
and bottom of the box to use to put your plant purchase in at the checkout.
However, we typically run out of these boxes early in the spring. Which means we
must resort to buying cardboard boxes. We sincerely appreciated any boxes or
flats you can bring with you for us to put your plant purchases in... it helps
the environment, and helps us keep our costs down. Thanks so much!
Use of the Conference Room
Many of you have seen our conference
room when you have attended a class. We use it every Saturday in the spring, and
occasionally on other days, but for the most part it sits empty. We would like
to invite gardening clubs and social organizations to use the conference room
during regular business hours. There is no charge for the use of the room, so
long as the conference room is left as you found it (of course, if you would
like to clean it while you are here, you are more than welcome to do so!) Being
located inside a garden center, it is not spotlessly clean, but it is a nice
room. With tables and chairs, it comfortably seats up to 20 people. Please call
or e-mail Darlita for more info or to reserve the conference room. Ph.
620-964-2463 or 2423; e-mail: retail@arnoldsgreenhouse.com
Food!!
Few natural things are more important
to us humans than food! As we are located a few miles from any eating
establishment, we thought it a good idea to have a few goodies available for
purchase... keep the kids and significant other happy while you shop, or to tide
you over til lunch.
We have a freezer full of Schwan's ice cream bars available for
purchase, as well as complimentary coffee and hot tea. And, as always, we have a
snack machine loaded with treats and a machine full of beverages. You are always
more than welcome to bring a sack lunch or beverage with you when you visit, as
well.
Roses are Inside!
The April 2007 Freeze was hard on us
and on gardeners alike (and most plants didn’t really enjoy it either). In
particular, our roses were hit hard by the freeze. To keep them safe from future
cold snaps, we are now growing and displaying them inside the retractable roof
greenhouse, just past the red truck. Perhaps we’ll even be delighted with more
rose blossoms due to it being just a bit warmer inside than outside! And, since
the roses are now inside, there are wider aisles in the nursery, making it
easier for you to select your favorite shrubs! A win-win solution!
Red Hat Society Ice Cream Socials
Women like to have fun! We invite Red
Hat Societies to join us for some fun Ice Cream Socials this spring! Please see
the Events page for more info and dates!
Gardens-in-a-Box
Do you want a perennial garden, but
don’t know where to begin? May we suggest one of our Gardens-in-a-Box? Choose
from several different perennial garden designs, and you will be on your way to
a wonderful garden! Design, plants, soil amendment, mulch, MYKE, and fertilizer
will all be included in each Garden-in-a-Box! A perfect gift idea!
Container Combos Book
Container gardens are fun and easy to
maintain! Often the hardest part is figuring out what to put in your container.
To help, we have lots of container "mannequins" planted up on the
endcaps with individual plants of each component plant available as well. We
have also just assembled a huge collection of pictures of containers. These two
binders of container combos are located in the Garden Inspirations Library in
the Conference Room. We have an awesome array of containers from which to
choose, the best potting soils, MYKE, and Daniels Plant Food to get you started
with Container Gardening! And, you are always welcome to use our Potting Bench,
or we can pot your containers up for you!
